Cinergy/PSI Offers Limited-Income Seniors, Disabled More Help With Electric Bills

PLAINFIELD, Ind., February 28, 2006 — PSI Energy Inc., a subsidiary of Cinergy Corp., has increased its energy assistance funding and relaxed some of the requirements for limited-income seniors and disabled customers needing help paying their electric bills.

Cinergy/PSI will start accepting applications for its “Helping Hand” heating assistance program Wednesday, March 8, in its local offices. The company has increased its funding and has approximately $300,000 in shareholder, customer and employee funds to distribute. Cinergy/PSI is also not requiring a matching co- payment this year in order for customers to receive more funds. The program begins in March when other state and federal assistance programs are winding down.

To be eligible for assistance from the program, customers must meet the following guidelines:

  • be 60 years of age or disabled;
  • be a Cinergy/PSI residential customer of record;
  • have a total annual household income not greater than federal poverty guidelines; and
  • be an applicant to the Indiana Energy Assistance Program.

Beginning March 8 for as long as funds are available, eligible customers can receive a one-time, $60 credit on their electric bills, with no co-payment required. Customers may apply directly at local Cinergy offices or call Cinergy’s customer service toll-free number, 1-800-521-2232, for an application. They may also visit cinergypsi.com and click on the “Quick Links” section to print an application with instructions for applying by mail. Assistance will only be offered as long as funds are available.

Cinergy shareholders contributed $200,000 to help fund the Helping Hand program this year, an increase of $75,000 from the 2005 program. The company is also asking customers and employees to join it in assisting those in need through voluntary, tax-deductible contributions. Approximately $100,000 already has been collected in customer and employee contributions. Customers may donate to the Helping Hand Program by adding a donation directly to their Cinergy utility bill payment. Tax-deductible donations to Helping Hand can also be made at any Cinergy office or by mail. Checks payable to “Helping Hand Program” should be sent to: Helping Hand, 1000 E. Main St., Plainfield, IN 46168. All money donated to the program goes entirely to aid customers.

“During the past 22 years the program has made the cold winter months warmer for more than 100,000 customers,” said PSI President Kay Pashos. “Because of the generosity of our customers, shareholders and employees, we will be able to assist more families who need help with their energy bills.”

Cinergy is the parent company of PSI Energy, Indiana’s largest electric supplier serving more than 750,000 customers in portions of 69 of Indiana’s 92 counties.
