Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a fee to use the One Time Payment option?
Yes. Duke Energy has partnered with Western Union Speedpay® to provide you with the option of using your credit card or electronic check to make payments. The $3.50 convenience fee is the amount Speedpay charges, per transaction, to cover processing costs associated with handling credit card and electronic debit payments. Other companies are able to add the processing costs of these requests to the overall pricing of their products and services. Because Duke Energy is a regulated utility, we are unable to do that. Only customers who chose to use this service will be charged the convenience fee.
This fee will be displayed as a separate line item on your credit card or checking account statement. There is a maximum payment amount of $1,000.00 per transaction for residential customers.
Is this service secure?
Yes. For security and privacy of transactions, Speedpay uses 128-bit encryption, which is the safest encryption technology available today.
I’m enrolled in e-Bill. Why is my Speedpay payment not reflected on my online account?
If you are enrolled in Duke Energy’s e-Bill program, your Speedpay payment will not be reflected on the e-Bill site until your new bill is generated.
Why do I have to enter my ZIP code?
We use your ZIP code for security purposes to help verify your identity and to ensure that the appropriate account is accessed.
Will my current account information be displayed when I use the One Time Payment option to pay my bill?
Yes. The system will provide your current account information and display the amount due and the past due date.
If I have received a disconnect notice and use this system to pay my bill, will my payment be applied to my account immediately?
Yes. All payments are applied immediately and will stop orders to disconnect your service.
If I was disconnected today for non-payment, can I use the One Time Payment option to pay my bill?
Yes. The system will provide prompts to guide you through the process to pay your bill and any additional fees that may be required. The system will also automatically issue orders to reconnect your service. Note: Customers with indoor electric meters and gas meters will need to call Duke Energy to schedule a field visit to have service reconnected.
If my service was disconnected today, will I need to call Duke Energy to have it turned back on after I pay my bill?
The system will provide prompts to guide you through the process. A request to reconnect your service will be issued immediately after your payment is received. However, customers with indoor electric meters or gas meters will need to call Duke Energy to schedule a field visit to have service reconnected.
Why did I receive the message, “Your payment has been processed and applied to your Duke Energy account…the disconnect order has not been cancelled?”
The payment you made was below the minimum amount required to stop the disconnection of your service. The system will advise you of the total amount that must be paid to avoid service disconnection.
Can I use this service to pay multiple accounts?
Yes. However, you will need to make a separate payment for each account and a convenience fee will be associated with each payment. The convenience fee for residential accounts is $3.50, with a maximum payment amount of $1,000.00. The convenience fee for non-residential accounts is $12.95, with a maximum payment amount of $10,000.00.
Can I use this service if I am a non-residential customer and need to make a payment of $12,000.00?
Yes, but there is a maximum payment amount of $10,000.00 per transaction. This means you will need to make two payments -- one payment for $10,000.00 and another for $2,000.00. There will also be a $12.95 convenience fee for each payment transaction for non-residential accounts.
