North Carolina Interconnection Information

Interconnection Standard

The North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC) has ordered revised interconnection standards for North Carolina in Docket E-100, Sub 101, that will affect all new applications for interconnection after June 9, 2008. All forms including the interconnection application, the interconnection standard, and the interconnection agreement have been revised.

This statewide interconnection standard was developed to standardize the interconnection process while making sure that the integrity of the electric grid is protected and public safety is not compromised.

The North Carolina Interconnection Standard (pdf, 264 KB) governs all state jurisdictional interconnections regardless of size or connection to the distribution or transmission system. There is an optional inverter process for generating facilities no larger than 10 kilowatts. Most residential installations and many business installations will be able to take advantage of this streamlined interconnection process.

Complete the appropriate application in the interconnection standard and return with your application fee made payable to Duke Energy Carolinas.

The information in your application will be used to assess your facility’s impact to the electric grid and to design the interconnection point. We will complete an engineering review, if necessary, to determine any additional Duke-owned equipment that will be necessary for interconnection.

If Duke is required to install additional equipment such as poles, transformers, metering, and protective devices as part of your facility’s interconnection to the electric grid, you may pay for these additional facilities through a monthly Interconnection Facilities Charge or prepay the cost of these facilities for thirty (30) years.

Customers must demonstrate liability insurance coverage to protect themselves from claims for bodily injury and/or property damage. Once the Interconnection Facilities are determined and an Interconnection Agreement is signed, Duke will order the necessary equipment for the interconnection and schedule any equipment for installation.
