Volunteerism Spreading Positive Energy

With volunteerism as a cornerstone of Duke Energy for decades, helping communities become stronger is the focus of Duke Energy’s Volunteers In Action.

At the heart of Volunteers In Action is the Global Service Event, a corporate-wide focused volunteer effort that encourages employees to give back to their communities.

One of the unique aspects of the GSE is that it’s a grassroots effort. Employees and retirees identify needs in their own communities and provide leadership -- from volunteer recruitment to project management. The Duke Energy Foundation supported these activities financially in 2007 with almost $150,000 in Volunteer Grants for project supplies and materials.

The numbers in 2007 were impressive.

  • Employees and retirees gave more than 14,000 hours
  • completed 510 projects
  • and helped more than 370 different nonprofit organizations in 153 communities.

From cleaning up parks, to feeding the homeless and participating in energy efficiency projects, employees and retirees demonstrated the spirit of community service. Just one of the many ways Duke Energy gives back to the communities it serves.
